He is the author of,among other numerous works of fiction and non-fiction,A Fair Country:Telling Truths about Canada. (Epperson thinks this is the most important book on Canada he has ever read.)
This is an extraordinary opportunity for UCV and the wider Vancouver community to hear one of Canada’s most important and influential public intellectuals.

Cruel Cuts for those with Mental Illness

Rafe Mair reviews the current cutbacks in the health authority budgets to mental health services in the community. He also responds from his perspective as a user of mental health services and as an advocate for systemic change. “An estimated 90 agencies that have contracts with the Vancouver Coastal Health Region are being told to reduce costs,but provincial Health Minister Kevin Falcon says the reductions will not mean a cut in services. “Falcon told the legislature Tuesday that his ministry is making changes in order to provide better service for those individuals coping with both mental health and addiction issues.”(more …)

The vote on a new bill for a National Housing Strategy is likely taking place Wednesday,September 30. Federal MP Libby Davies,from Vancouver East,has tabled Bill C-304,an “Act to ensure secure,adequate,accessible and affordable housing for Canadians.”Bill C-304,the Secure,Adequate,Accessible and Affordable Housing Act, calls for a national housing strategy to coordinate work across all levels of government. CMHA believes the bill would provide a framework to address homelessness,non-profit housing solutions,and address the housing needs of people with disabilities including mental illness.
